TECHNICAL DATA:
Part of the Prague road system, the Strahov car tunnel connects the quarters of Smíchov and Břevnov in two double lane tunnel ducts with level connection to the existing road network in Břevnov and multilevel connection in Smíchov.
The design and implementation of the tunnel was substantially influenced by the size of the cross profile of the tunnel, quality of the geological environment, its variability and the height of the the hanging layer over the vault.
With regard to the cross profile of 125 m2 and with regard to the geological conditions, the driving was performed using a modified German system. The tunnel from was divided into four parts, two support tunnels, a tunnel roof and the kernel with lower vault. In segments with difficult geological conditions with the portals semi-circular roof shields were used. In places with more favourite geological conditions, in central tunnel segments, special modified erectors were used.
Air-shafts are connected to the tunnel ducts approximately in the middle. Tunnel airing is transversal and with forced circulation. The carriage way of the Strahov tunnel is made of a continually reinforced cement-concrete plate.
